IFC v Maryland refixture
Our Shay Murtagh Precast Intermediate Football Championship Section B Round 4 refixture against Maryland will be played under lights in Tubberclair this Tuesday, September 16 at 8pm.
It follows the abandonment of last Saturday week’s original fixture in Killucan after 44 minutes due to an injury to a Maryland player. Thankfully, the player has since made a full recovery.
Ladies v St Paul’s/Delvin
A very successful first season back in the adult ladies football ranks ended last Friday night in the Killucan rain when we succumbed to a well-drilled St Paul's/Delvin by 2-4 to 2-8 in the Wright Windows Junior Championship quarter-final.
On a night when everything seemed to go against us - we had two sin-binnings and lost Aoibhin Jackson to a hamstring injury - we battled to the bitter end in tough conditions and drew level through a Grace Maloney penalty, only to concede an unanswered 1-1 at the death. It was a heartbreaking way to lose, but the girls could still hold their heads high.
Picking up where we left off in our previous game against Shandonagh, captain Jill Draper kicked an early point which was followed by a lobbed goal from Aideen Pettit in the ninth minute. We led by 1-1 to 0-2 at that stage, but our north Westmeath opponents grabbed the next four points before we got two back to go into the break on level terms, 1-3 to 0-6.
St Paul’s/Delvin netted a penalty five minutes after the restart to open up a three-point lead. The margin remained the same until the 55th minute when Aíne Pettit lofted a free into the danger area and substitute Gillian Heeney was fouled for a penalty which rising star Maloney expertly dispatched to tie up the scoring, 2-4 to 1-7.
The game was now there to be won but, after we picked up a yellow card, St Paul’s/Delvin regained the lead in the final minute of normal time before putting the result beyond doubt with a goal from the resultant kickout.
Well done to all the girls and the management team of Brendan, Alan, Niall, Myra, Annette, Seoidin and Sabrina. We'll regroup in the New Year and come back stronger and better!
