Division 3 v St Mary’s
Our men’s Division 3 team made it two wins from two in the All-County Football League when they overcame St Mary’s by 0-12 to 0-8 in Rochfortbridge last Saturday afternoon.
A workmanlike second half performance when favoured by the wind was key to the victory. The home side held a slender 0-5 to 0-4 at the break and quickly doubled their advantage after the restart before we gradually took control to build on our Round 2 win over Multyfarnham (our Round 1 clash with Bunbrosna was postponed).
St Mary’s opened the scoring before an excellent Jacob Browne two-pointer into the wind gave us the lead. Jack Molloy made it 0-3 to 0-1 before the ‘Bridge kicked four unanswered points, including one from a two-pointer, to open up a 0-5 to 0-3 lead. Indeed, they could have been further ahead but for some wayward shooting. Dean Fitzgerald grabbed the last score of the half to leave the minimum in it at the short whistle.
The hosts were first off the mark in the second half, but Kilbeggan then upped the tempo and regained parity through points from Darragh Coffey and Ray Kennedy before further scores from Coffey, Molloy and Nigel Scally (two-pointer) in a fine spell propelled us into a 0-10 to 0-7 lead.
The ‘Bridge narrowed the gap to two, but couldn’t get any closer as solid defending, coupled with late points from Fitzgerald and Scally (free), made sure of the win.
Meanwhile, our second team were left frustrated once again after their scheduled Division 5 game against Multyfarnham last Friday night was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Multy.
Team: Conor Mullins; Martin Ward, James Fox, Mel Kiernan; Conor Carroll, Shaun Pidgeon, Jacob Browne; Ray Kennedy, Joey O’Neill; Dean Fitzgerald, Nigel Scally, Micheál Coffey; Colin Draper, Darragh Coffey, Jack Molloy. Subs: Paul Fennell, Jack Mullins, James Finnegan, Arthur O’Rourke, John Victor, Dylan Maloney, Michael Joyce and Niall Rabbitte.
