JFC ‘B’ v The Downs and Ballinagore

Our men’s second team experienced mixed fortunes in the Junior ‘B’ Football Championship last week.

Fresh from an excellent away win over Garrycastle in the opening round, we followed it up a thrilling 2-15 to 1-16 over The Downs at a sun-kissed St James’ Park on Tuesday evening.

Jack Molloy’s goal helped us to a slender 1-7 to 0-9 half-time lead before The Downs dominated the early stages of the second half to go 1-13 to 0-7 up. But we dug deep to get back into contention thanks to a Padraig Carton two-pointer, a brace of Conor Delaney frees and a goal from substitute David Fennell in the 49th minute.

Another replacement, Conor Carroll, tied up the scoring at 2-12 to 1-15 before the visitors edged back in front again. But after Danny Scully levelled, Fennell and Carton scored late points to complete a stirring comeback.

An even balmier St James’ Park was the venue once again for our Round 3 encounter with neighbours Ballinagore on Saturday evening. Despite fielding a much-changed team, we took a 0-6 to 0-2 lead into the break. But just as against The Downs, we struggled after the restart and found ourselves trailing by 0-7 to 2-7 at the second water break after conceding two identical goals from high balls in.

A brilliant Michael Carton major halved the deficit before points from David Fennell (free), Dean Fitzgerald, Cillian Rochford (two) and Danny Scully left the minimum in it. However, we couldn’t regain parity and Ballinagore had the final say to win on a 2-11 to 1-12 scoreline.

Our next game in the JFC ‘B’ is against Milltownpass who defeated us in the recent All-County League Division 5 final.
