Double delight last Friday night
Our men’s and ladies teams enjoyed dramatic Junior Championship victories at different locations last Friday evening.
At the same time as our ladies opened their campaign with a 3-13 to 1-16 victory over Cill Óige in Castledaly, our men edged out Mullingar Shamrocks by 2-15 to 2-12 in Rochfortbridge to make it two wins from two. As it turned out, both teams needed late goals to get across the line.
The ladies game threw in half-an-hour before the men’s and it didn’t look good when we trailed by 0-6 to 1-10 at half-time. But we dug deep to regain parity at 2-11 to 1-14 with eight minutes remaining thanks to goals from Laura Murphy and Aislinn Carey before Carey raised her second green flag to complete the comeback.
Our men also trailed Mullingar Shamrocks by 0-6 to 1-5 at the break before a Nigel Scally goal shortly after the restart propelled us into a 1-10 to 1-8 lead. We extended our advantage to 1-15 to 1-9, but Mullingar fought back to tie up the scoring at 2-12 to 1-15 before substitute Cillian Rochford’s last-gasp goal decided it.
Well done to both teams who are in championship action again next weekend, but thankfully not at the same time. Our ladies are away to St Loman’s at 6.30pm on Friday, while our men make the short trip to Castletown-Geoghegan to face Bunbrosna at 5pm on Saturday.

Sympathy
Deepest sympathy is extended to Philip, Mel, Susan and all the Kiernan family on the passing of Maisie Kiernan at the weekend.
Maisie – who was Philip’s mother and would have been 95 in November – was a fantastic woman who reared a big family in Ardagh, Co. Longford. She loved the GAA and even travelled to Fossa this time last year to meet the famous Clifford brothers, Paudie and David, after Kerry’s All-Ireland football final victory over Donegal.
We also extend our condolences to the Fox family, Doon, Kilbeggan on Jim’s passing last week.
May Maisie and Jim rest in peace.
