Delaney Cup coming to Kilbeggan!
Leinster football champions Westmeath and the Delaney Cup are paying us a special visit this coming weekend.
The coveted silverware will accompany members of Mark McHugh’s team to St James’ Park on Sunday, September 20 at 2pm. All are welcome to attend.
JFC 1 quarter-final v Killucan
A Junior 1 Football Championship semi-final against The Downs on the weekend after next awaits after we secured a hard-earned 1-15 to 0-13 victory over Killucan in The Downs last Sunday afternoon.
Darragh Coffey’s 39th minute goal set us up for the win after an indifferent first half display. We had to wait until the 16th minute for our opening score from a 13-metre Nigel Scally free. Conor Delaney added a point before Killucan went 0-5 to 0-2 up. But we got back level at 0-5 apiece at half-time thanks to fisted points from Cillian Rochford and Scally along with the latter’s second free.
Killucan edged back in front after the restart before we finally got motoring with an unanswered 1-4. Scally started the scoring sequence with a two-point free which put us ahead for the first time before converting another placed ball. Danny Scully fisted over a point before the decisive moment came when we won the kickout and worked the ball to Coffey who blasted home from close range.
Scally kicked another free and his second two-point free to extend our lead to 1-12 to 0-7. Killucan got back to within five points on three occasions in the final quarter as further scores from Padraig Carton, Coffey and Rochford kept them at arm’s length.
Before the throw-in, a minute’s silence was impeccably observed as a mark of respect to the late Padraig Smith.

LGFA Junior Championship quarter-final v Moate
Our ladies footballers produced an excellent display to overcome Moate by 6-18 to 1-4 at Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone last Thursday evening to qualify for the Junior Championship semi-finals.
Brendan Nannery’s charges will face a highly-rated Clann Gaels outfit for a place in the county final on Saturday in Shandonagh at 3.45pm after dominating from about the 20th minute onwards. An Aislinn Carey goal, via the underside of the crossbar after Emma Murphy, Fiona Claffey and Áine Pettit had posted early points, gave us a 1-4 to 0-2 lead before the Moate second string twice reduced the deficit to the minimum.
But we finished the first half strongly with points from Aoibhín Jackson, Claffey, Grace Maloney and Áine Pettit, along with a palmed goal from Jackson, to take a 2-9 to 1-4 lead into the break.
In an outstanding second half performance, we added a further 4-9 while keeping our opponents scoreless. The goals were supplied by Laura Murphy (two), substitute Ciara Heavin and Maloney.
