All roads lead to Kinnegad for our Junior 1 Football Championship semi-final against The Downs on Friday evening at 7.30pm. All support for the lads would be greatly appreciated.

Shanette St James’ Park

LGFA Junior Championship semi-final v Clann Gaels

A season of progress came to an end for our ladies at a blustery Shandonagh last Saturday when they succumbed to a very strong Clann Gaels team in the Junior Championship semi-final.

A hat-trick of goals from Annie Dolan proved decisive as the Bunbrosna / Ballynacargy combination ran out 5-8 to 1-9 winners. We were always chasing the game after Lauren Sullivan palmed home a first-minute goal. With Dolan raising two more green flags before the end of the first quarter, we twice trailed by 11 points before a Grace Maloney goal in the 20th minute after Laura Murphy hit the crossbar handed us a lifeline.

Clann replied with a point, but we finished the half in the ascendancy with a brace of Murphy frees either side of a brilliant team score from Fiona Claffey to trail by 1-4 to 3-4 with wind advantage to come.

We needed a good start to the second half to have a chance, but instead Clann Gaels got it when Dolan set up Meadbh McLoughlin for their fourth goal in the 37th minute. Laura Murphy kept us in touch with two more frees and substitute Niamh Durkan also split the posts before Dolan put the game beyond us when she completed her hat-trick in the 58th minute.

Murphy (free) and Claffey scored late consolation points after the Longford-border club had a player sin-binned. Despite the disappointment of missing out on a county final, the year was laden with positives, not least a Division 5 League title. Well done to everyone involved!

Delaney Cup visit

There was a great turnout for the visit of Westmeath stars Ronan Wallace, Matthew Whitaker and Brandon Kelly with the Delaney Cup to Shanette St James’ Park last Sunday afternoon.

In brilliant sunshine, the Leinster SFC-winning trio were absolute gentlemen, happily posing for photographs with the coveted silverware and presenting medals to our younger members. As a token of gratitude, they were each presented with bottles of Kilbeggan Whiskey.

Ploughing fundraiser

Well done to all the volunteers who gave up their time to sell official programmes at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan over the three days last week.

Expertly organised by Niall Carey, the fundraiser was a resounding success and is vital to supporting our day-to-day running costs.
